Migrate from Google Docs to kutlhub
kutlhub has a built-in Google Docs importer. You download your documents from Google Drive as a folder, drop the zip into kutlhub, and each Doc is converted to a plain Markdown document in a space.
Here is the whole process, plus what to expect from the import.
1. Gather your documents in a Google Drive folder
In Google Drive, put the documents you want to move into a single folder. Subfolders are fine — the structure comes along.
2. Download the folder as a zip
Select the folder in Drive and choose Download. Google packages the folder as a .zip, exporting each native Google Doc as a .docx file inside it.
3. Open the kutlhub importer
Sign in to kutlhub and start a new import. Choose Google Docs as the source, drop in the .zip, name the import, and submit. kutlhub converts each .docx to Markdown.
4. Review and land them in a space
kutlhub shows you the converted documents before anything lands, so you can confirm the result. Then they become plain Markdown in your kutlhub space — ready for your team and AI agents, with real-time merge and a local copy via the open-source kutl client.
What to expect from the import
- Text, headings, lists, tables, and basic formatting convert to Markdown documents.
- The importer reads the .docx files a Google Drive folder download produces; comments and suggestions are not part of that export, so they do not come across.
- Complex page layout, embedded drawings, and linked Sheets or Slides are not converted. Markdown is plain by design, which is what makes the documents portable.
FAQ
How do I export Google Docs for kutlhub?
Put the documents into a Google Drive folder, then download the folder. Drive zips it and exports each Google Doc as a .docx. Upload that .zip to kutlhub’s Google Docs importer, which converts each file to Markdown.
Will my formatting carry over?
Text, headings, lists, tables, and basic formatting convert to Markdown. Complex layout, drawings, and embeds are simplified — Markdown is plain by design, which is also what makes the documents portable.
What about comments and suggestions?
Comments and suggestions are not part of a Google Drive document export, so they do not import. In kutlhub, collaboration uses structured signals (flags, blockers, questions, decisions) and real-time merge.
Do I need a kutlhub account to import?
Yes. Importing happens inside kutlhub, so you sign in first. During the private beta you join from the waitlist and we reach out when it is your turn.
